The GRATOS Project
The objective of GRATOS project is to bring together experts from diverse scientific domains, with experts on Graph Theory and Discrete Mathematics and related theories under a joint research collaboration for the further exploitation, improvement and development of Graph Theoretical tools combined with specialized tools, application based, for providing efficient solutions for some important practical problems originating in diverse Sciences such as Neuroscience, Astrophysics and (social and communication) networks.
Although the targeted problems concern diverse application domains, they lie within a common and important family of problems; i.e. clustering problems. The fact that clustering problems are one of the most important challenges in the field of Big Data and Data Science, illustrates not only the necessity of this project but also its sustainability through future applications of the project results in other domains.
In a nutshell, the vision of the proposal is to target the important, multidisciplinary task of clustering, building our research approach on the strong foundations provided by Graph Theory, extended and enriched with modern developments of the field of Network Science and customized using application based techniques, for the development of efficient solutions to those kinds of problems.
The consortium aims combine their diverse expertise under a common scientific framework to develop efficient solutions for some important problems in diverse Sciences related to clustering.
The consortium, together with the collaborators involved directly or indirectly in this proposal, through the projects outcomes and several training and dissemination activities is expected to stand as a leading forcing center for the growth of a Cypriot interdisciplinary scientific community activated on Applying Graph Theoretic Tools in Sciences.
Figure 1 illustrates the multi-disciplinary nature of the project. It shows the commonalities between current knowledge of various fields (Graph Theory, Network Science, Clustering problems) and disciplines (Astronomy, Neuroscience) investigated in this project, but also with other disciplines not considered in the project, demonstrating the future exploitation of the project’s results in various domains besides the ones focused by GRATOS.
